Google Today released Motion Stills, an iOS app from Google Research that acts as a virtual camera operator for your Apple Live Photos.

Google Motion Stills stabilization app for iOSGoogle is using video stabilization technology, which freezes the background into a still photo; this results in looping GIFs and movies that come alive.

Google's algorithm uses linear programming to compute a virtual camera path that is optimised for videos and burst photography as if they were filmed using stabilisation equipment.

Short videos are perfect for creating loops, so they've added loop optimisation, which identifies the optimal start and end points, and rejects blurry frames.

Motion Stills don't require any data connection to work; all the processing is done on the device itself.

Google Motion Photos is free and available from the App Store right now.
